Additional details

Origins of the name and legend
Legend has it: A group of sailors from the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Navy, sent as ferrymen on the Po River, got so drunk they were found in a cellar in the Oltrepò hills. The wine's name, "Buttafuoco" (translated into German as "Feuerspeier"), derived from its ability to ignite spirits, and legend has it that the sailors, seeking this passion, were more successful in wine than in battle.

Evolution of the name: The name "Buttafuoco" is attested in official documents from 1861. Later, the Austro-Hungarian Navy launched a ship called the "Feuerspeier" and, after 1920, the Italian Royal Navy bought back this ship and renamed it "Buttafuoco", in honor of the wine.

More recent history
Production: The wine, prized for its intense red color, aroma, and flavor, was in demand throughout Italy and the world as early as the 19th century, as evidenced by Veronelli's praise, which described a wine matured in oak barrels, something unusual in the Oltrepò area at the time.

The Consortium: To protect this wine, the Consorzio Club del Buttafuoco Storico was established in 1996. Members are committed to producing the wine according to strict internal regulations.
