Ciliegiolo is an Italian red wine grape variety. It's a minor component of traditional blends like Chianti, but interest in this single-varietal wine has revived in recent years.

Vinification and refinement This wine is produced from Ciliegiolo grapes grown in the organic vineyard of Tenuta di Santa Lucia on the hills of the Tuscan coast near Pisa .

Vinification is traditional: perfectly ripe grapes are harvested and pressed immediately. The must is then collected in stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Primary fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature for approximately 15 days. Once extraction is complete, the wine is filtered and aged at a constant temperature in oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months , achieving smooth, classic tones.

Description of the wine Color: Deep ruby red . Bouquet: Rich spicy aromas and notes of black pepper with a hint of raisins. Flavor: Full-bodied, balanced, very intense and spicy, with flavors of sweet cherry.

Additional details

The Tenuta Santa Lucia vineyard is located approximately 100 meters above sea level at the junction of the Arno and Era valleys, on ancient rain-fed soils composed of layers of tuffaceous sand and gravel. This soil, which at times reveals the meeting of the river and the sea (now about 25 kilometers to the west), is also rich in fossil skeletons and shells.

The climate is typically Mediterranean, with daytime thermal breezes coming from the sea and nighttime breezes channeled from the Arno and Era valleys, allowing for excellent ventilation and protecting the vineyard from the risk of heat stroke caused by recent climate change.

The vineyard is completely surrounded by woodland, which it nestles into and occasionally intertwines with. This osmotic exchange with the native varieties of the Mediterranean scrub allows for an interesting, occasional aromatic exchange and a richer interaction between the vineyard and the local fauna. Ciliegiolo is a typical variety of Chianti, particularly on the Tuscan coast, where in recent years it has garnered increasing support from producers interested in making an original contribution to the Tuscan tradition.

Ciliegiolo produces wines with excellent structure and, in some cases, even power, without sacrificing the elegance and intensity of the fruit. The variety produces rather large and compact bunches and therefore requires extreme care and attention throughout all stages of cultivation, especially during harvest and vinification.
