Experts in the art of underground aging since 1976, Sakurao Distillery has been aging its whiskies in oak barrels buried at the foot of Mount Osorakan, several hundred meters underground.

These surrounding mountains are also particularly generous for the Togouchi brand, as the water used is also taken from the Oze River.

These unique and differentiating characteristics contribute to the development of a range of elegant, fruity whiskies, precisely blended.

Aged in bourbon barrels then refined for 3 months in sake barrels sourced directly from the Chugoku Jozo cellars

Delicate on the nose – Vanilla, green apple, malt

On the palate it is complex – Lactic, woody, white fruits

The finish is long – White fruit, spices, malt

Additional details

Togouchi: Japanese roots for more than 100 years.

In 1918, Ichiro Shirai founded the Chugoku Jozo Distillery in Hatsukaishi, in the Hiroshima area, near Seto Beach, where he produced fermented products for the production of sake.

In 1963, 45 years later, the distillery began producing sake and shochu, traditional Japanese spirits, and also a few bottles of a blended whisky made with Scotch whiskies under the name «Glory Whisky Extra».

In 2003 Chugoku Jozo launched the first blended Whisky Togouchi (17 years) which takes its name from the tunnel in which it matures.

In 2013, Togouchi whiskies began their expansion outside of Japan.

The Birth of Sakurao Distillery

In 2018, Ichiro Shirai's heir, Koichiro Shirai, upgraded production facilities to support Togouchi's strong demand and established the Saukorao Distillery right next to the brewery.

The Chugoku Jozo company became the Sakurao Distillery & Brewery.

The distillery is strategically located opposite Miyajima Island, where the famous UNESCO World Heritage gate attracts many tourists every year, further increasing Togouchi's notoriety.

In 2021, the distillery launched its first Togouchi Single Malt.
